The credit for this popularity of yoga goes to a great yogi Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who is recognized as the father of modern yoga. One of his disciples, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois developed the Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Most of the yoga teachers in the western world are teaching these modern forms of yoga.

The word Ashtanga is actually a Sanskrit word. It means eight limbs. These eight limbs are described in the first written document of yoga- the Yoga Sutras. It was written by a famous sage Patanjali in about 200 B.C.

The eight limbs can be correlated with the nature and form of a full grown tree. Like a tree, which stands erect against all diverse situations, the students who practice yoga can achieve this ability through consistent practice and dedication. 1. Yama- The purpose of this limb is to develop moral and ethical principle. It consists of five more social disciplines’

A) Ahimsa (non-violence).

B) Satya (truthfulness)

C) Asteya (non-stealing)

D) Brahmacharya (continence)

E) Aparigah (non possessiveness)

2. Niyama- The purpose of this limb is to build up an inner integration.

3. Asana- This is actually a posture, this is based on the principle that a restless body will give rise to a restless mind. As a result, you can gain a true realization of yourself.

4. Pranayama- It helps eliminate the distraction in your mind; as a result it becomes easier for you to meditate.

5. Pratyahara- This limb helps you to gain mastery on your senses. With this limb you can maintain the internal focus.

6. Dharana- It helps to realize your true self. You get the ability to concentrate on a particular thing while keeping aside the outer world.

7. Dhyana- It means meditation; here you are totally absorbed without disturbing the attention.

8. Samadhi- In this state, the ‘I’ disappears; you will enter the spirituality of oneness and become one with god without any duality of consciousness. It seems quite unbelievable, right? Just buy a yoga DVD and you will know what I mean.

The first five limbs of Ashtanga are termed as the outer phase of yoga. These limbs are concerned with your body and brain. While the last three limbs are called inner phase of yoga which is much concerned with your mind.

Based upon the principles of these limbs, Pattabhi Jois developed the modern form of yoga i.e. the Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga and started to teach the methods in his yoga class. One who undergoes such yoga training can master herself/himself in all of the above principles!!
